Sharad Navratri is one of the most celebrated festivals in the Hindu Calendar and also marks the beginning of the wedding season. This year Sharad Navratri starts on Saturday, October 17 and will culminate into Vijay Dashmi on Sunday, October 25.

Celebrations and significance

Navratri that literally translates into "nine nights" celebrates Goddess Durga in her 9 avataars and is symbolic of the victory of good over evil. To appease the Goddess, many devotees fast during this period while few others fast on the first and last day only. Scientifically too, since this is a changing weather season ( summers to winters), it is a good time to detox and get rid of your body toxins. This is also the reason why devotees abstain from consuming non-veg food and alcoholic beverages. Regardless of the reason you decide to fast, there are some dos and don'ts of fasting that you must observe.

Tips of fasting

Don't stay hungry for long periods: The main purpose of fasting is to get rid of excess toxins in your body but not through starvation. When you don't eat, your body goes into shock and starts preserving the fat and water content in your body - this leads to bloating. Starving can also lead to binge eating your next meal, which can be quite dangerous. If you are avoiding grains, then stay keep yourself full with fast friendly vegetables and fruits.

Hydrate: We often underestimate the importance of drinking enough water. When you are not eating enough, you should make it up by drinking enough water. Staying hydrated will keep you alert and prevent water retention.

Avoid fried food: A lot of people fast for the entire day and then consume a big meal at night which can lead to a lot of problems such as weight gain and acidity. If you are consuming just one major meal in the day, stick to whole grains, vegetables, salads and curd based items, instead of fried food.

Stick to local produce: Fasting is beneficial only if you do it right. For this, it is important that you stick with local produce such as fruits, cottage cheese, curd and other dairy products. Avoid fancy store bought products since they have hidden ingredients that might not be great for your digestive system.

Get enough exercise/sleep: Detoxing your body is not just a physical exercise, but mental detox too - along with fasting, you should also get enough exercise and adequate sleep. This is also a great time for outdoor activities as the nip in the air is just right. Also, meditate regularly.
